Our Programs

How we advance the rights, health and livelihoods of widows

Driven by our members’ needs, which reflect the needs of the wider community, and founded on the promotion of positive living among widows and their dependants, SWISS designs and implements proactive programs that address the social, health, economic and governance issues affecting our primary target group.

1. Widows and Orphans Rights and Development Program (WORD)

A rights and development program that strengthens the voice of widows and orphans and improves their access to justice and to clear, usable legal information.

What we are doing

  • Strengthening the voices of poor and marginalized community members, particularly widows and orphans, to enable them to access justice and realize their rights.
  • Identifying and training SWISS members as paralegals to enhance their knowledge and capacity to advocate for the rights of widows and orphans.
  • Developing an abridged version of the Estate Administration Act and simplified guides on court processes and procedures to improve access to legal information and services.

2. Wellness and Health Integrated Program (WHIP)

An initiative that strengthens access to quality health services for widows, their dependants, and the wider community. The program promotes preventive, promotive, curative and restorative healthcare, including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), HIV and TB services, mental health support and community-based care.

What we are doing

  • Engaging widows and their dependants in designing and implementing health interventions.
  • Strengthening community referral networks to improve access to healthcare services.
  • Supporting community health volunteers and healthcare workers to respond to the health needs of vulnerable households.
  • Promoting disease prevention, sanitation, hygiene, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Delivering health education to improve community knowledge, attitudes, and practices.
  • Integrating mental health and psychosocial support into community health programming.
  • Leveraging technology to strengthen program monitoring, learning, and impact measurement.

3. Widows Socioeconomic Empowerment Program (WISEEP)

Dedicated to improving the social and economic well-being of widows by strengthening their skills, livelihoods, networks, and participation in community development. The program empowers widows to build sustainable sources of income, access opportunities, and actively contribute to social and economic transformation.

What we are doing

  • Mapping widows and widow groups in Embakasi West Sub-County to better understand their needs and strengthen support systems.
  • Delivering training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and access to appropriate inputs, technologies and services, while facilitating linkages with financial institutions.
  • Equipping widows with practical skills in agribusiness, embroidery, beadwork, modern basketry and business value chain development.
  • Supporting the growth of cottage businesses into sustainable social enterprises.
  • Expanding networking opportunities to connect widows with markets, partners and support networks.
  • Harnessing collective strengths and experiences to increase widows’ participation in public and community affairs.
  • Mobilizing human, economic, and social resources to support program activities and enhance community impact.
